Carrot Cave

Short platforming game where you're a little bunny trying to escape a cave, thing is, you're competing against a turtle.

HOLD SPACE TO BOUNCE (For every bounce you jump higher, but mind the roof!)

You must exit the cave before the turtle, else you'll be trapped forever! Beware, each level you beat makes the turtle faster and faster; grab carrots to slow down the turtle.

CONTROLS:

  • A,Left Arrow - Move left
  • D,Right Arrow - Move right
  • Space - Jump / HOLD TO BOUNCE
  • Enter - Pause/Start button

The turtle is at advantage: his path is straight with no hazards on the way. But hey, he's still a turtle with a walking stick; be swift and nimble.

Very cool concept! Seems like some levels might be impossible, but maybe I'm just bad :P

Would be nice with some kind of scoring system.

I felt the turtle more like a sophisticated timer than a Duel

The turtle at the top sold it for me, very original idea well done!

What a clever idea! A classic tale of the tortoise and the hare, wrapped up in a time-attack platformer.

The graphics are crisp and work well for a game like this. I found the pitch change of the music every level a little grating. The controls were very intuitive, although sometimes the bounce wouldn't work. The aim of the game was easy to understand and the sound effects were cool.

At times I didn't understand how the level progression worked. At one point I got to the next level even though I lost, and at one point I went back a couple of levels after losing.

@Snorre Thanks a lot!

@trygve Maybe you're not using the bouncing mechanic, hold space to keep on bouncing to jump higher :)

@apaganini That's definitely what it is, in our defense it's my programmer's first jam ever haha

@KeithorKeith Thanks a lot, we definitely thought it'd be a funny idea lol

@bradur Thanks for you insight, one of the most detailed so far! There's definitely some to the bounce that's not explained in game, like the carrots taking off your bouncing. The level progression is actually kind of interesting because (Also not explained lol sorry) after the first level, each one is randomized (Not the entire tilemap layout, game picks the layout from a list), if you lose, you'll get to another randomized level, it's worth noting that you don't repeat beaten levels.

cute graphics and music, liked the bouncing mechanic and the added element of racing the turtle, was a bit confused by the level progression, are they just random ? oh wait i read the comment above, yeah the probably could have been clearer, also got confused by what stopped the bounce as that threw me off a few times, maybe just some visual indicator would do for that. I'm a sucker for a cute retro platformer so Anyway had fun :)

Tortoise vs the hare… And my hare struck out many MANY times. Or died in the lava to be me precise.
Good game. :)

Very cute! Love the pixel art, everything looks very good.

Also loved how the music speeds up on every level. Might be nice to have it slow down again if you eat a carrot, i.e. tie the music directly to the tortoise's movement?

Controls have a good snappy feel to them, although for a speedy platformer you could consider increasing the overall speed.

It seems like sometimes the tortoise wins, but you go to the next level anyway, is that supposed to happen?

[Note: I always write my comments before reading the others, so that last point is clear now.]

This was a very nice game ! I really liked the pixel art, especially the tileset (I just found the white vortex ? explosion ? after the flag a bit confusing) ! The concept is pretty interesting.

The sfx works well with the game, the music however gets repetitive quite fast.

The mechanics are pretty good but I think they could be improved, especially the bounce. I don't thinks this is the best control scheme for it, it's not very intuitive and hard to get a hang of. I think pressing jump when you're about to or are colliding with the floor would likely feel better. Otherwise the controls feel pretty good and the level design is cool.

Overall this is a cool game, good job !

As a duel this sure is unfair. Not like the fable, but maybe the hare here lost a bet or something. Seen similar challenges before, platforming against the clock, yet the theme calls for it.

As pointed out by others and you, the controls have some strange edge cases. I didn't mind too much, bouncing around as a hyper active bunny was still strangely compelling. The retro sound of the music is grating, but the tune fits and the ever increasing pitch is a clever touch.

Good job in all.
