Janken King

Compete in the International Rock Paper Scissors Championship's final

NB : The game might be laggy/buggy on web navigators (Godot's web export can be fussy :/ ), if that's the case for you please download the native builds (Windows, Mac and Linux) that corresponds to your OS, for the best experience ! (They are located at the bottom of the itch.io page)

Playable directly from your browser and downloadable for all OS on itch.io

Controls

  • Enter : Validate
  • Arrows : Select move

How to Play

Sorry if the game is a bit hard to understand at first, we barely finished it and hadn't time to make it perfectly intuitive.

You play several match of successive janken. In order to help you figure out what to play the enemy will hint a few of the moves he will make, you can then deduce the opposite.

In the janken screen, you must use an arrow (up, left or right) to select whether you want to play rock, paper of scissors.

If one of you wins less janken sets than the other he will lose a life. The first with 0 lives loses.

Some bugs prevented the full experience on Chrome/Edge

@apaganini Thanks for letting us know, we added a windows, a mac and a linux build ! We'll try to fix that bug ASAP.

@apaganini The bug is fixed, however the game is still a tad laggy on chrome. It should be fine on firefox or with the native builds (windows, mac, linux) we added though.

I adore the sounds in this game! It's amazing, the art too, It's really funny! It's a fun idea, although having the words colored is a bit to easy, maybe do this for the first one or two matches and then make everything white, that will make it more fun to read the text for hints, now I just looked at the color. That's my only real point of critique though, well done! It's a solid entry

I can't get the game to run in Firefox/Mac and input does not work in Chrome/Mac.
Please, if you manage to fix this let me know. I'll come back to your game and rate it then!

@Lemur Thanks a lot, I'm glad you enjoyed it ! (indeed the game is very easy, if you want some challenge you have to try to lose :P there's the reward of seeing the defeat screen)

@maartene Mmm weird it works on mine but I know people that have the same problem. I'll try to fix it but it's Godot's web build black magic so I don't know if I'll be able, however there is a mac build on the itch.io so you can download a dmg in the meanwhile ! (btw make sure you click on the game window before entering inputs on chrome and then press enter to start the game, I guess you did but if that's the reason it means it's not a bug and I don't have to investigate ^^")

@Ashtrail the ending was indeed worth it :D And now you say it, trying to lose is harder, your mind just doesn't let you to think non-logically

@maartene weird, I have a mac, and it opened fine in Chrome, maybe something isn't fully updated on your computer that is needed?

It was laggy for me. I don't know why. But I liked how you used Rock-Paper-Scissor as a duel. And the art design is very good. Props to the artist of the team.

@ashtrail @lemur, I tried the game on my Linux system and there it works perfectly!
Amazing polish to this game! (I gave the graphics a 10). It looks really good.

Yay, more Godot games! Works smoothly on Chrome/Linux for me.

This must be the best polished version of Rock Paper Scissors that I've ever seen. Still, it's Rock Paper Scissors, so no high marks for Gameplay :)

The graphics, animations and font all work very well together, so a 10 on Graphics is well deserved. The music adds a lot to the atmosphere, but I'm rating Audio pretending that the music wasn't there, because you didn't make it yourself during the weekend.

It would be cool if the hints were voice-acted as well.

Minor gripe: it's not clear which of the two is my own character. I guessed correctly, but you could have made this clearer by (a) moving the hint exclamations to the right, and (b) moving the up/left/right button hints to the left.

Thanks to all of you ! (I don't know if my drawings deserve such praise, but I'll take it nonetheless 😏)

@thomastc I guess the actual gameplay is more of a simple Super Simon with partial information, but fair enough. I agree for the voice acting hints (I actually made a few more lines but we didn't have time to add them in). Finally I didn't think about it before you brought it up, but indeed it is a bit unclear which character you play as, good point !

Splendid and humorous visuals, fits the theme well; interactivity isn't up to par.

Janken is going to have a hard time catching on, if one of the players always has to give a clue. Maybe if the clues were less obvious? RPS isn't a very compelling competition to begin with, due to randomness, so some additional rules would be welcome. Can't think of anything at the moment, though.

There is a lack of feedback in places. The weapon selection phase is less than intuitive as there is a rush to make a choice while everything is moving around, including the non-selected items (sometimes?). Additionally the music track does not change at all, not even when winning or losing. The voice-acting is funny, but there is a criminal lack of it.

Solid effort despite running out of time and all that. That last bit of polish is missing and the core idea is a bit janky.

Overall: Above Average (6.0)
Graphics: Amazing (9.0)
Audio: Average (5.0)
Gameplay: Bad (3.0)
Originality: Below Average (4.0)
Theme: Good (7.0)

@Ashtrail Actually our own game suffers from the same problem of not making clear who's who, make of that what you will :)

Pretty cool game although hard to understand at first, maybe drawing the arrow keys inside the game alongside the icons would've been better to understand as I was clicking at first, maybe should've read the controls lol.

I think the theme would've benefited from this being a multiplayer game, because it being singleplayer felt a bit too simple.

Nice game nonetheless and had some fun, the graphics were pretty good!
