A small platformer with a bit of magic.

Here we go!

I decided to do something I've never done before ever

I made a platformer.
What a surprise!

But In all seriousness this time around I tried to aim for a more metroidvania-ish thing.
It's a little rushed, but it turned out decent, I'd say.

The controls are the same as always with my heckin' games
(arrow keys, x, and C)
Next time around I'll try to add customizable controls.

key word try.

Anyways, tell me if you have any issues, and I hope you enjoy the game!

straight up, this is pretty sweet. I really enjoy the retro graphics and the gameplay, though could use some polish, is really fun. The enemies have their own behaviors and seems varied. I really enjoyed the way you implimented the terrain.
My only complaint is I don't know how to choose different spells so I couldn't get past obtaining the second spell. I really enjoy the retro feel, the graphics, music and gameplay feels like I popped in an old nintendo cartredge.

EDIT: So I figured out how to use it after some trial and error. The learning curve is… yeah lol. Really enjoying it

@Psychic_Ash Thanks for playing, dude.
Yeah, I probably should've been more clear with how to use each one. Whenever you pick up the spell it shows what key combination is used to activate it. Probably should've been more clear with that.
Whoops
Anyway glad you liked it despite that. :)

Ok, this game is so cool. I loved the pico-8 styles graphics. Actually, not sure if this was made using pico-8 or anything similar.

Metroidvanias are my favorites. Spell mechanics have excellent feels and are very original. Definitely one of the top entries.

Oh, the music. Srsly, I'm in love with that music.

@thesunda It's made in GameMaker Studio 1.4 (the free one, because I'm a poor young husk of a boy).
I'm not gonna say for sure that I'll make a post-jam version, since I always say that and haven't done it yet for a single game, but maybe I will for this one, since I don't feel I did the idea justice.
Or maybe I won't. Who knows?

Either way, thank you for playing! :O

wow the graphics are really beautiful argh
and the level design is quite good too aaaa
the game feel and all the screen shake and all the spell's small effects are just too good

one thing i would like to point out: the mana bar didn't really work for me? even after i used up all my mana i still could use all my spells? also the hitboxes are a bit off and the one-hit ko objects kind of irritated me. maybe you could save after collecting a collectible?

but otherwise wow this is such a good submission. if there was some boss fight at the end that would be really epic!

Dude, this game is awesome! The micro pixel art style really worked for me, and I noticed a hint of Celeste in there too, which made me happy.

Controls are solid as heck, and the game is really satisfying to play through. Epic, some might say. =P

There were a couple things I'd tweak, though. When you fight your first big skeleton, they take so many hits that I was starting to wonder if I needed a different spell to kill them, one that could also break the gray blocks. Mana also seemed unlinked to spellcasting, but I preferred it that way because then you weren't ever stalled just waiting for it to refill. Oh, and the third key's lack of checkpoints made it pretty brutal, both ways.

But all of these are minor tweaks to an otherwise incredible game. Fantastic work!

(oh, also, Alt+Enter makes it fullscreen, everybody.)

@innomin thanks for the feedback, man!
Yeah, if I were to make a post-jam version I'd replace the first skeleton with a different enemy just to make it less tedious. I also completely forgot about the mana being unlinked when i published it, so that's a fat oopsie on my part. Glad to hear that you still had an epic time playing it.

Really good game. One of my favourites of this jam. The only thing I would have to criticise is the health of the skeletons. Everything else is well game and fun to play. Awesome job!

@baconinvader- yeah. The health on those things was ridiculously high. Thanks for playing, though!
